Description

“Poppies in a Vase of My Ancestors” is a captivating painting that draws viewers into a realm where nature and the remnants of the past converge in a striking display of artistry. At the center of the composition stands a vase, its dark navy blue hue nearly black, with faintly discernible bone-like patterns on its surface. Among these patterns, you can see a bird skull, a human skull, and a fish skeleton, hinting at the passage of time and the cycle of life and death.
From within this vessel of ancestral, a riot of colors bursts forth in the form of flowers, albeit not in their realistic form. Instead, they are painted in a scaled and simplified manner, their hues heightened to create an otherworldly allure. Turquoise poppies, blue cornflowers, and purple anemones spring from the depths of the vase, their vibrant tones juxtaposed against the dark backdrop of the vessel. Interspersed throughout the bouquet, delicate pink coral bell leaves and gray-pink twigs evoke the imagery of a submerged coral reef.
Set against a muted gray background, the bouquet commands attention, its dynamic energy drawing the viewer into its enchanting embrace. Below, the terrazzo floor stretches out in shades of gray and brown, providing a solid foundation for the floral spectacle above. In “Poppies in a Vase of My Ancestors,” the artist masterfully blends elements of the natural world with echoes of the past, inviting viewers to contemplate the interconnectedness of life and the enduring beauty found within the passage of time.

Meet the artist

I studied design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow though I really wanted to either study painting, or goat and sheep breeding. I obeyed the advice given and followed what was deemed to be the wiser and more conventional path, though this was short-lived as I quickly returned to nature and painting.

My paintings draw from the world of plants and animals. I am inspired by these worlds, I like to transform them, simplify them, change their colors and add meaning to them. I enjoy the huge bouquets bursting from the vases. I am fascinated by the hare’s crazy eyes that are following me in the studio.

I use various media in Canary Yellow Mallow Vases. Often the base is acrylic paints. Based on this, I start using contrasts. Thick and thin lines as well as spots and smooth color transitions argue for their place. My works are full of colors, shapes, lines, spots, thick lines and patterns.

Based on the description, they could be accused of chaos and disharmony, but this is not the case. The compositions are mostly static, hieratic, central, even if they use asymmetry, they maintain balance. Every rebellion has its own framework here – a framework within which it is fulfilled.
